RL Internship.

I haven’t blogged for what seems a hundred years. I came back from Birmingham to Southampton the day before I began my Ralph Lauren internship and ever since I have been commuting to and from London everyday. Leaving the house at 6 and arriving back home at 8 and later. It has been tiring and in this heat- painful. My feet are swollen, I have huge blisters and I also found a piece of glass lodged in my foot the other day. Non of this attractive. However it has definitely taught me the importance of decent walking shoes.

I am currently interning at Ralph Lauren Golf and so far it has been incredibly interesting. The first week was spent taking in samples for the Spring 2014 collection. I was responsible for checking in items, labelling, folding and steaming along with helping to merchandise the showroom. However the second week and Β onwards is an entirely different process. Golf resorts and clubs, as well as department stores arrange appointments to come in and view the products displayed in the showroom in order to come up with a collection for their own store. Buyers will come in and discuss how previous RL collections have faired and what items and colours have sold particularly well. They are then guided around the showroom and given a run down of the products available for 2014 for Menswear Golf, Womenswear Golf, RLX Womens and RLX Men.

RLX is a Golf product which is much more technical than the original Polo Golf product range. The fabric is designed to enhance play making the player feel comfortable whilst playing. Current world class players are sponsored by RLX including Luke Donald, Billy Horschel and Matteo Manassero. Whilst Tom Watson, Davis Love and Jonathan Byrd are sponsored by the classic Polo range.

Meeting buyers is interesting and taking in how different businesses sell the products is my favourite part. Some sell more RLX than Polo. Some do not sell RLX in stores at all. Some feel green sells better than most colours, whilst another will believe blue is their customers favourite. There is a lot to think about in order to ensure success and increased sales.

Spending time around golf products and people who live the sport day in and day out is refreshing as I went into the job knowing absolutely nothing about the sport. Within in two weeks I am considering watching the Open this weekend. Shocking.
